How-to: the recording setups

Everything we have learned about recording, kept here for everyone, free and read-only, like the FAQ. Started on 2026-10-29; each setup gets its page as it is written, with the gear, the placement and a sample.

The microphones

to be written Which microphone for which place: the lavalier for the cockpit and the wind, the phone's own for a quiet cabin, the USB one at the desk; levels, the wind cover, where to clip it.

The selfie stick

to be written The phone on a stick, the lens at eye level, the arm's length that frames the shoulders, the prompter's question under the lens so the eyes stay on it.

The computer: your head in an insert, the screen shared

to be written Recording from the computer as a caster: the screen captured while you talk, your head in a corner insert from the webcam, the prompter on the phone beside the screen; the tool we use, the frame sizes, how the insert is placed in the cut.

The iPad setup

to be written Talking to one device while another records you: the iPad in front with the prompter, the phone on its stick recording, so the eyes meet the lens and the question is read without looking away. The setup of the first Showcraft video.

The GoPro on a boat

to be written Where a GoPro goes on a sailboat: the mounts, the angle from the cockpit, the audio that survives the wind, the time-lapses of a passage.

A video idea, from the setup up

to be written How a recording setup becomes a video idea: what each setup is good for, and the kinds of episode each one carries.
